Sunday, March 12th - I HATE THIS DAY OF THE YEAR!!!!! This is the shortest day of the year….you get up…have breakfast…read the paper (yes, I know, we're old!) and presto change-o…it’s time to go to bed! It always goes by so fast…and this year is no different!
Michael and I got up late, had a bite of breakfast, SKYPE-d with AJ and by then it was early afternoon and time to pick up Anne and head into Charlotte for a matinee of an original play reading. This occurred at the VAPA center, which none of us had ever heard of. This place is dedicated to providing low cost studios and exhibition spaces for the visual and performing arts…and there was PLENTY of incredible art on display:
-hmmmmm...wonder why I took a picture of this?!?
We found the ‘’black box’’ studio where the play was going to be read:
and ran into some old friends….once you are part of the community theatre family, you almost always run into someone you know:
-that's Erica on the left, the author of the play and Michael's director in INTERRUPTIONS, and Ginger on the right, Michael's wife in NATIVE GARDENS
The director talked to us for about 2 minutes before the play started, explaining what we were going to see: ‘’A staged reading is a rehearsed read-through of a script, performed for an audience. Actors are not off-book for a staged reading. I will narrate any stage directions that we are unable to reflect while holding scripts, to help you better envision the action of the play. On stage, you will see a suggestion of the set, minimal props and unified dress that suggests the characters costuming. The purpose of a staged reading is to provide an opportunity for the audience and the playwright to hear the work out loud, gauge the effectiveness of the dialogue, pacing and flow, as well as other dramatic elements that the playwright may wish to adjust.’’
We sat back and enjoyed the 90 minute play….which was really pretty funny!
We were home by 5 PM, had the last of the Mexican Chicken Soup for dinner and I got to sew for a bit before settling in front of the TV.
*** If it weren’t for the ‘’spring forward, fall back’’, I wouldn’t get any exercise
at all. ***
