My honey made me an egg/cheese/toast Monday morning (3/18) before he left for golfing, and I spent the rest of the morning at a neighbor’s house, packing up some of her stash of quilting fabric. They are moving tomorrow/Tuesday (!!) and she did not want to take any with her….so she called on Sunday to see if I could come and get it. I said I had people who could use it….I always try to make that clear, as some people will not want to give it to me if they think I am going to give it away….and that is fine. I have people calling me fairly frequently, asking if I will take yarn or fabric and I generally say yes…..but I do always stress that I will be passing it along to other people.
The fabric was in my neighbor’s basement, some in a large heavy tub and I thought I would never get the stuff upstairs and into my car….but finally it was done… ready to be distributed among several people! Then at the very end of packing everything up, she said ’’oh, by the way….could you finish these 2 quilts for me’’? I was VERY clear that I was not keeping any of the fabric she was giving me…and I said I really didn’t finish things for people, but that I would contact a friend of mine to see if she was interested in finishing the quilts. What I found really funny/interesting was on the first one (and this is from a quilter remember), she said ‘’this just needs a small border and then it is finished’’…..and I said ‘’well, the top would be done then….but batting has to be purchased and then it still needs to be quilted and binding made and applied after that’’….and the second quilt…the blocks aren’t even made!
If my friend is willing to do it….I will send an invoice detailing what is involved and what she would charge and we will go from there I guess….is that bad? What would you do? Would you do it for free?
I spent the afternoon cutting strips to finalize all that I need for this bed quilt. I still need to cut the dark purple strips which make the quarter squares, but I think I finally have everything I need in my pizza box for Thursday. The top 3 rows are the top of the quilt….I just need 2 more coordinating squares for that.
I’ll sew that all together, then lay out the bottom half…..sew that together….then one long seam joining top and bottom before deciding on final sizing and borders.
Michael heated up the leftover reubenwich for our dinner, along with leftover Caesar salad from the Longhorn restaurant….and after dinner he wanted to watch a special TV program of his.....so I finally finished the last 2 rows of Sandy’s quilt:
*** Apparently exercise helps you with decision-making It's true. I went for a run this morning and decided I'm never going again. ***
I'd charge her for the quilts she wants you to finish.
I’m with Janice, I thought she was asking you to take the unfinished quilts and make them and was not expecting them back.
If she wants them back then certainly charge her
My goodness! Unless she was your very best friend in the world (& she isn’t…she’s a neighbor!)
I would say “No.”. A tiny, little two letter word that I’ve only recently learned how to say at the age of 74 .
I think I do like the same fabric put together in squares for your bedroom quilt, rather than the scrappy look. It will be worth the extra effort you made. 🙂
And I was thinking the moving neighbor was GIVING you the unfinished top and blocks along with the fabric. If she was expecting you to finish and/or put together the blocks, then you are right to expect $$ for that...
