Rueben-wich tutorial, SHQ Show & Tell, trip to visit Arizona Mary & Rick

Donald Trump sent his top lawyer to the Supreme Court to argue that birthright citizenship should be stripped from hundreds of thousands of American-born babies. It went so badly that his own solicitor general nearly argued Native Americans aren't citizens either — and had to be rescued by a Trump-appointed justice.

In one of the most jaw-dropping exchanges of Wednesday's already disastrous hearing, Justice Neil Gorsuch — appointed by Trump himself — pressed Solicitor General D. John Sauer on the logical consequences of the administration's own legal theory. The exchange was as stunning as it was revealing.

Gorsuch asked a simple question: under the administration's proposed test for birthright citizenship, are Native Americans born today automatically citizens? Sauer's answer was a slow-motion legal train wreck. First, he said yes — obviously. Then Gorsuch pushed him to set aside the statutes granting Native Americans citizenship and answer based purely on the administration's own constitutional theory. Sauer's answer changed: "No." Under the 1868 congressional debates, he explained, children of tribal Indians were not considered birthright citizens.

The courtroom went quiet.

Gorsuch pressed harder. But under your test — the domicile test you want this court to adopt today — are tribal Native Americans born on U.S. soil birthright citizens?

Sauer fumbled. "I think so... I have to think that through, but that's my reaction."

"I'll take the yes," Gorsuch replied — essentially throwing the solicitor general a life preserver before he could drown any further.

Let's be absolutely clear about what just happened. The Trump administration walked into the highest court in the land with a legal theory so sweeping, so poorly thought through, that when a justice applied it logically, the government's own lawyer couldn't guarantee that Native Americans — people whose nations existed on this continent thousands of years before the United States did — would qualify as birthright citizens.

Thursday (4/2) was all about quilting….and FOOD!  We always have a pot luck luncheon on the first Thursday of the month, and I decided to take a reuben-wich….so I hopped up Thursday morning to put it together.  It is very easy and very good, so I thought I’d do a tutorial:

-yes, back in the day I used to make my own dough....as a matter of fact, that's where this recipe came from in the first place...from the back of one of those 3 strip yeast packages...but now I press the easy button and use Pillsbury pizza dough in the can. Open it up and spread it out on a greased cookie sheet. Put some grainy mustard down the center third of the dough.

-I always end up making 2 ruebenwichs, and I buy 3/4 pound of corned beef to split over both. Layer that on top of the mustard.

-Place a can of WELL DRAINED sauerkraut over the meat, then top it with Thousand Island dressing.

-add Swiss cheese on top of that...again, I buy 3/4 pound for two of them. Cut the sides of the dough.

-braid the sides up over the top and pinch together. Sprinkle with caraway seeds and bake according to pizza dough instructions. It is yummy and people really seem to like it...I cut the cooked rueben-wich with a pizza cutter

We had lots of good food, and of course, lovely show and tell:

but the highlight of the day was a story from one of the quilters.  Like me, she ‘’talks’’ a lot of her texts, meaning she speaks into her phone and it types out the text.  And, again like me, she usually hits send before checking what the phone typed out….which resulted in her sending the following text to her daughter (pretend her hubby’s name is Michael)…..’’Yes; Michael bought me lots of panties today and planted them in the garden’’!!!!  We all had a hard time stopping laughing at that, and she explained that the phone misunderstood the word ‘’peonies’’…..and there were lots of jokes about it for the rest of the day!

I was home around 3:30 PM and after 1 quilter came by to pick up her quilt, Michael and I talked about our date night.  Of course originally we were going to do champagne and puffy things….but there was a new-to-us food truck at the Lake House that Michael wanted to try….so he had shrimp and I had fish and both were excellent!  We settled in to snuggle after that and watch STAR TREK – THE WRATH OF KAHN.

Friday morning (4/3) I had a bunch of monthly chores to get off my plate before I could head to the studio.  After that, I decided I wanted to whip out one of my own quilts, so I loaded up that crazy HST one:

and set up the pattern and kicked it off:

My leftover batting bag was overflowing, so this gave me a chance to use up a bunch of scraps of batting.  While that was stitching out, I dropped back to working on my CONNECTIONS blocks, and got several finished:

I made short work in the evening of packing for my Arizona trip.

My trip to visit Arizona Mary and hubby Rick (4/4 - 4/8):

was wonderful. The flights themselves were uneventful, as was my journey through the airport. I told every TSA agent I saw ''Thank you for working and I'm sorry that Washington is full of idiots!''.

The scenery in Arizona is so different from anything else I've seen, I was constantly amazed as we drove around:

-this is in their backyard

AZ Mary took me to 3 - 4 quilt stores (it's hot out there...why do they get to have so many? Color me jealous!!) where I definitely stimulated the economy buying several beautiful prints. I got to watch her load up and finish a quilt, which was great as she uses both belly bars and I only use one:

She served delicious meals (including an EASTER feast) and makes everything she does in the kitchen look effortless...a skill I do NOT possess! Here's a small example....she made these apple pie cookies that were just scrumptious!

We had a lovely boat ride (can you see Bach in the rocks?):

with an unexpected bonus of meeting another quilter, and a fun game night that certainly kept me on my toes. And we talked....and talked...and talked...and talked!!! I am SO GLAD I went....but will still miss her a LOT at QUAP in a couple of weeks!

*** Why do people say ''I saw it with my own eyes''? Do they sometimes use other people's eyes? ***

*** Aging is when your brain says ‘’we ride at dawn’’ and your body says ‘’we absolutely do NOT!’’ ***

*** Don't let old age get you down....you may not be able to get back up! ***
